Handle Colours and What They Mean in Plumbing

.

Do you know the difference between RED and GREEN handles on Gate Valves and Ball Valves?

There are many facets to plumbing, each product serves a unique purpose and is formed around standards and codes that refer to the respective area of plumbing. We discuss the difference between red and green handles on gate and ball vales, where they are used, how they are work and key points from AS3500 Watermark Ceritfication.

RED HANDLED: General Purpose

WHERE THEY'RE USED: Red handled valves are versatile and commonly found in a variety of settings. They’re perfect for general industrial applications, such as in manufacturing plants, HVAC systems, and agricultural plumbing installations where there is less regulation and potable water isn't required.

GREEN HANDLED: Watermarked

WHERE THEY'RE USED: Green handled valves are typically used in demanding applications which are heavily regulated and where safety, reliabilty and precise control are paramount. Such as in your home, hospitals, water treatment facilities, or where potable water is otherwise required.

Key Points from AS3500 on Watermark Products

• CERTIFICATION & MARKING: Watermark products carry approval marks indicating compliance with AS3500 and its subsequent standards, ensuring they meet safety and performance criteria.

• APPROVED USES: These valves are approved for specific applications like potable water systems and environmental controls, ensuring they are suitable for their intended use.

MATERIAL STANDARDS: Manufactured from materials that meet durability and safety requirements to prevent leaks, corrosion, and contamination.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA: Designed for reliable flow control and leak prevention, maintaining system integrity over time.

How Do They Work?

Both RED and GREEN handled valves operate in a similar manner:

• GATE VALVES operate by lifting a gate in and out of the fluid flow path. Allowing full flow when raised and completely stopping flow when lowered.

BALL VALVES operate by rotating a perforated ball, controlling the flow by aligning or misaligning the ball with fluid flow path. Allowing full flow when aligned and completely stopping flow when rotated out of alignment.
